In short (whole book)
Theo returns from Earth to the Nine Worlds after forty years, young again but stripped of his former soulcrafter strength. Stranded on Tatian with Fiyu and Navim, he enters a training program, befriends Nauda, abandons an incompatible light design, and rebuilds his soul home around gravity. Magnafor's assault on the Mufuru vault drives Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu into flight. They cross Tatian and Dusan with the mysterious Senka, survive court feuds and a deadly pursuit, and reach Norro Yorthin, where they join House Blacksilver. A Dusan family binds Theo to a duel over his knowledge of a destroyed historical family. While the companions earn materials and chasm invitations, Theo develops a movable singularity, Fiyu contacts her relative and ascends to archcrafter, and Nauda strengthens her binding and nullification skills. Theo defeats the rival ruler without destroying his soul home. The Dusan household is expelled, the trio holds three invitations to the Chasm of Lamentations, and a warning about the destroyed family leaves a larger danger unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 5 (this book)
Theo returns from Earth to Tatian after forty years, restored to a young body but without the soulcrafter power of his former life. An interworld disruption has scattered refugees across Tatian, including an Ichili soulcrafter overwhelmed by the world's bright light and unfamiliar contact customs. Theo calms her, gives the name Jake, and learns that she is Fiyu. A stone-bodied Arbai Mundine later identified as Navim helps him fashion a protective blindfold for her. Theo proposes that the displaced travelers receive training in return for service while they await routes home. During the journey toward that training, Theo gathers basic sublime materials and plans a defensive soul home. He also meets Magnafor, another returnee from Earth, who claims repeated returns attract abnormal demon danger and warns Theo against trusting him. When demons assault the caravan and a Tatian village, Fiyu attacks from range and Navim protects the refugees. Theo fights with Navim's spear despite lacking soulcrafter power. He activates its inscription against a forming second-stage demon, destroys the threat, and awakens once more as a first-tier soulcrafter.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Healers repair Theo's wounds, and he begins absorbing materials into a still-undeveloped soul home. Fiyu continues relying on him for help with Tatian light and asks him to build the protective chamber he promised. Famage directs the stranded travelers to Mufuru, where service against rising demon attacks will earn training and where competitions offer better materials. Magnafor, now also a first-tier soulcrafter, warns that keeping close may worsen the danger. At Mufuru Landguard Village, Famage's uncle Nanjuma oversees the reopened school. His concealed strength and the guarded vault attract Theo's attention, while Magnafor shows a more troubling interest in the restricted area. Theo builds a door that lets him observe the outer world while soulcrafting, then forms a crude solar-stone chamber and begins a vestibule for managing kante. His intended foundation remains incompatible with the flame fruit he has collected. When instructors divide the students into small families, the staff-wielding Nauda chooses Fiyu, accepts Theo after Fiyu advocates for him, and also selects Kuber. The new family is ready to begin formal instruction and public service.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
Nauda links her students so they can inspect one another's soul homes. She is preparing for archcrafter status, Fiyu has a tightly specialized design, and Theo's advanced door makes his incomplete structure stand out. The group responds to a demon attack under Nanjuma's command, where Nauda demonstrates powerful binding skills and Fiyu applies more controlled light attacks. Afterward, Theo discovers that part of Mufuru's barrier has been covertly altered and privately suspects Magnafor. Training and material challenges deepen the companions' cooperation. Theo helps Fiyu build a dark-glass sensory chamber that regulates painful light and sound, while Fiyu and Nauda begin defining a friendship across very different touch and privacy customs. Theo continues preparing the sunlight-based blueprint inherited from his earlier life. When he ignites its planned core, the construction explodes and leaves the central chamber fused beneath black residue. He isolates himself while searching for a repair, but Nauda confronts his decline and Navim offers a philosophy of adaptation rather than rigid blueprints. Nanjuma concludes that the old design suited the hopeful person Theo once was, not the man he has become. Theo abandons it and commits to rebuilding around his present purpose.
Story so far - through chapter 26 (this book)
Theo reorganizes his soul home around gravity. A rotating mass core gives him his first working technique, though its range, cost, and ability to manage multiple effects remain limited. In Mufuru's family tournament, Nauda and Fiyu carry the early matches while Theo initially loses. A suspected poisoning leaves most of Nauda's family ill before its second contest, yet the reduced team continues. Nauda exposes a hidden trap technique, Fiyu reveals a lethal dark cutting attack, and Theo uses gravity to defeat several opponents. Their undermanned family still wins. Theo chooses to remain with Nauda and Fiyu instead of transferring to advanced classes. He reveals that Jake is a travel name, tells them he is Theo, and admits that he previously lived in the Nine and was apparently killed. The three become confidants over his suspicion that Magnafor intends to rob the landguard vault. During the next tournament match, a student powers an inherited archcrafter armament through a dangerously specialized soul home. Its attack shatters Navim's stone body and cracks his vital core. Theo stabilizes Navim's scattered pieces while Nanjuma prepares an urgent journey toward Arbai treatment, but the emergency may also give Magnafor the opening he wants.
Story so far - through chapter 30 (this book)
Nanjuma carries Theo, Nauda, Fiyu, Magnafor, and the injured Navim through a gate toward Navim's school. An unseen ruler-level attacker brings down their vessel, and Magnafor runs back to the gate while mercenaries interfere. Theo reaches him, but Magnafor resists his gravity with manifested armor and destroys the Tatian side of the gate. The companions cross the desert on foot and deliver Navim to his school, where a healer confirms he will live. Navim's elder master returns them to Mufuru in exchange for future accounts of worlds beyond the Nine. They find demons surrounding Mufuru while Magnafor and hired allies work at the vault barrier. Theo's group defeats the mercenaries and disarms a traitorous student, but the barrier closes before they can follow Magnafor. A spatial vortex then erases the vault-tree and everything within it. Magnafor is presumed lost, though his death is not directly confirmed, and Nanjuma survives the wider demon battle with serious injuries. An authority-tier landguard arrives to investigate outsiders said to attract demons. Believing the inquiry threatens them, Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu leave Mufuru in secret and begin traveling north together.
Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)
After months of separate travel and disguises, Theo reunites with Nauda and Fiyu outside Nlukoko. The city is independent of ordinary landguard authority but controlled by a dangerous foreign lord. Its archive contains old accounts of a powerful traveler associated with artifacts like those once given to Theo and Magnafor, yet the records do not explain why travelers from Earth received them. The group hopes to research further, acquire transportation, and find a northern route that may eventually lead Fiyu toward Ichil. A demon breach erupts before they can establish themselves. Nauda and Fiyu fight through the market while Theo helps stop a second-stage demon formed through sacrifice. During the attack he rescues Senka, a small blue humanoid whose species and manner of speech are unfamiliar. The Lord of Nlukoko appears as a four-winged, fire-using authority, confirming the danger of remaining in his domain. Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu use the confusion to evade the checkpoint and cross the gate into Dusan. Senka follows them through, while her origin and the reason she was pursued remain unknown.
Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)
Nauda's observation of Senka reveals a dense sphere of mixed material where an ordinary soul home should be. The group concludes only that she may come from outside the Nine and is not evidently a demon. Fiyu takes responsibility for her care as the travelers seek resources in Dusan. Theo develops an anti-mass component, while Fiyu completes a stealth field able to hide the party's bodies, sound, and indirect traces. In a court-controlled city, Theo learns that more than a century has passed since his earlier Dusan life. His old allies and caches are effectively beyond reach. Local family customs soon trap the group in a dispute: Fiyu misreads ritual threats in a duel, Theo intervenes with gravity, and Nauda wins a formal contest only for an archcrafter to break her arm and pay the permitted blood price. Using the cover identity Bartolo Ein of Fythe, Theo accepts an invitation to the great rainhorn hunt. The group decides to prepare for four months and use the hunt to finance transport. Rather than spend their limited funds on healing, Nauda attempts the archcrafter barrier twice in succession and successfully ascends.
Story so far - through chapter 54 (this book)
The companions earn money, improve their soul homes, and kill a dangerous second-stage demon for a village. Nauda's new archcrafter strength proves decisive, while Theo continues making his gravity design more modular. In the great rainhorn hunt they combine gravity, binding, stealth, and Fiyu's blade to secure valuable kills. They sell enough to afford transport, but a noble rival turns an earlier wager into open conflict. Theo develops a torsion bolt, yet the rival withstands it and defeats him in close combat. Fiyu steals the noble's fast sleigh and carries the group away before Theo takes the controls. They strip identifying marks and tracking components from the stolen vehicle, disguise themselves, and return through Nlukoko. In a restricted archive, Nauda finds evidence that the landguards' campaign against dangerous outsiders receives outside money and intelligence. Theo suspects a connection to the enemy from his prior life, but cannot confirm it. Senka, who has secretly traveled with the pursuing family, warns that the rival has reached Nlukoko and is seeking the city's lord. The group immediately flees north in the repainted sleigh with its earnings converted to portable craft gems.
Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)
Two sleighs pursue Theo's group across the northern wasteland. A ruler-tier rock-like beast interrupts the first confrontation, mauls members of the pursuing force, and drives the travelers into a cavern. A pike-wielding archcrafter follows them inside. Nauda briefly strips away his defenses, Theo wounds him with gravitational torsion, and Fiyu uses darkness and stealth to kill the remaining attackers. A dying signal draws the beast back, leaving the group trapped behind it. With no other exit, Theo constructs a temporary focusing structure and breaks through to archcrafter. His strengthened gravity pins the beast long enough for the group to lift boulders and accelerate them downward, killing it. They harvest its valuable hide, eyes, claws, and heart before resuming their journey. At the northern gate, Nauda shows the others the world-circling cliff that divides Tatian's habitable upper half from a devastated lower region filled with lava and enormous beasts. The revelation implies that Nauda came from below. With their pursuers defeated and their sleigh intact, the group turns back toward the gate rather than attempting the deadly descent.
Story so far - through chapter 67 (this book)
The travelers enter Norro Yorthin by helping the city guard contain demon incursions, earning citizenship plates and legal status. Fiyu investigates the local gate to Ichil but learns it opens into the Greater Dark, months from the nearest relay and far from her home. She decides to seek permission for a later message rather than leave immediately. Theo discovers that the Chasm of Lamentations will open in a little over a year and that its rare invitations can be bought or earned. He proposes acquiring three so the companions can enter together. Because Norro Yorthin's houses control work, trade, permits, and advancement, the group agrees that membership offers a shared route to materials, Ichil access, and the chasm. A trial at a red-bannered house ends when one of its authorities subjects applicants to overwhelming pressure and forcibly strikes Nauda down. They instead approach House Blacksilver, whose test examines how candidates manage a controlled spiritual contaminant. Fiyu rejects it cleanly, Nauda redirects it, and Theo improvises a disposable barrier. The house offers merit-based contracts, and the trio negotiates the fees before formally joining. Two of its five chasm invitations are available, but each costs more than a thousand merits.
Story so far - through chapter 72 (this book)
House Blacksilver gives Theo, Nauda, and Fiyu steady work, but their ordinary merit income cannot comfortably pay for both advancement and chasm invitations. Theo builds most of a second floor while Senka continues returning with valuables of unclear origin. During a guarded negotiation, a Dusan party from the region of the rainhorn hunt approaches Theo. Its elderly ruler declares that Theo's knowledge of a historical Dusan family is dangerous, attacks him, and invokes a personal vendetta. A neutral house imposes a six-month delay before Theo must duel the family's archcrafter champion. Neither side may attack or flee in the meantime. House Blacksilver protects the duel's formal terms but offers no special support. Nauda and Fiyu commit to helping Theo prepare. Since the rival is expected to reach ruler tier, Theo rejects a rushed ascension and seeks a decisive technical advantage. He completes eight second-floor chambers and connects four first-floor components intended to combine gravity, torsion, mass, and anti-mass into a small singularity capable of consuming kante. His current structure cannot contain or move it safely, so he joins a House Blacksilver delegation crossing an active war zone in search of stronger materials.
Story so far - through chapter 83 (this book)
The House Blacksilver delegation survives battlefield fire and completes a guarded exchange with an underwater community. Theo gains a pressure-resistant gemstone and later turns the house's poisonous mining waste into a valuable adhesive by arranging an offworld plant filter. As compensation, he takes a spinning stone for his torsion chamber, Nauda acquires an authority-forged trident to remake into a staff, and Fiyu receives material for glasswork. Tests of Senka meanwhile suggest that her body has no ordinary organs. Theo trains in a rock-filled quarry, builds a speed chamber, and acquires an expensive dry-supernova material with help from money Senka brings him. The strengthened heart chamber lets him relocate the singularity within his second floor. His Dusan opponent, now a ruler, later attacks him at the quarry and demonstrates superior speed, durability, and resources. Nauda prevents a finishing blow while Fiyu wins the quarry prize through her improved perception. With less than three months remaining before the duel, Fiyu secures a dangerous House Blacksilver assignment that will carry the group into Ichil far enough for her to contact her relative. The three depart almost immediately.
Story so far - through chapter 92 (this book)
The group enters Ichil's Greater Dark to retrieve medical cargo and reach a biolumen relay. Nauda suffers badly in the prolonged darkness, while Fiyu guides the sleigh and shelters the party under stealth. They rescue a stranded cavesteader family, survive predators attracted by exposed light, and deliver the family to an underground community. At the relay, Fiyu receives an old message showing that her relative once believed her lost and sends her present location in Norro Yorthin. Theo trades all his available currency for a material able to link separated points in space. On the return journey, an unseen creature wounds Fiyu with a venomous spine, but she survives after urgent treatment. Back in the city, Theo installs the space-linking material for eventual singularity movement. He gives up his merits for a dense mass material after learning that a remaining chasm invitation has become more expensive. Fiyu then reveals that she has already bought one invitation and intends the trio to go together. Still unwilling to ascend without her relative's guidance, she purchases soul-silver bracers and enters a first-tier tournament. Her stealth, perception, light attacks, and dark blade overwhelm the field. She wins a sword, additional merits, and greater standing within House Blacksilver.
Story so far - through chapter 99 (this book)
Theo completes his eight-chamber design and manifests a singularity that tears through matter and absorbs incoming kante. It is costly, difficult to move, and not a complete defense, but his space-linking chamber can relocate it. He wins a quarry contest for the second chasm invitation, only for mercenaries using his rival's defensive methods to ambush the companions. Theo kills one attacker with the singularity, Nauda stops him when bystanders are endangered, and Fiyu forces an ascent to archcrafter before defeating the survivors. The attack exposes Theo's decisive technique. House Blacksilver helps him rearrange and reinforce his soul home, while Nauda, Fiyu, and Senka contribute materials or money to his final preparations. At the sealed duel, a House Crimson authority stakes a third chasm invitation on Theo's defeat, and Nauda accepts. The ruler-tier rival wounds Theo deeply with a remote sword. Theo stays airborne, releases several partial singularities, then recalls them into one true singularity that consumes the sword and forces retreat. He dismisses it instead of destroying the rival's soul home. House Blacksilver wins, the Dusan household is expelled, and its elder warns that research into a family destroyed a century ago repeatedly brought demons and further destruction. Nauda receives the wagered invitation, giving the three companions the invitations they need for the Chasm of Lamentations.
How does it end? (ending)
Theo wins the sealed, authority-judged duel while still an archcrafter. After suffering deep sword wounds, he draws his rival into dismissing a series of partial singularities, then recalls them into a true singularity that consumes the rival's sword. Theo ends the technique instead of destroying the rival's soul home, and House Blacksilver is declared the victor. The rival's Dusan household must leave Norro Yorthin. Its elder warns that attempts to investigate a family destroyed roughly a century earlier have repeatedly brought death, demons, and further destruction, leaving Theo concerned that his own research has revived that threat. Nauda receives the chasm invitation staked by the House Crimson authority, joining the invitations already secured by Fiyu and Theo. Theo survives but requires healing, and his ruler-threatening singularity is now widely known. Fiyu is an archcrafter, has sent her location to her relative through an Ichil relay, and remains with the group. Nauda is also an archcrafter but is not ready to force her ruler ascension. Senka continues traveling with them, her origin and unusual body still unexplained. The three companions now have the invitations needed to enter the Chasm of Lamentations together.
