Hal (Protagonist)

Also known as Founder, Bright King, Beastborn

Appears from the start

Brightsong's founder and an exceptionally powerful Beastborn. After twice defeating the Archmage, he prepares to leave his settlement alone in search of answers, balancing his drive to grow stronger against his responsibility for the people who rely on him.

Noth (Supporting)

Appears from the start

Hal's partner and a leader of Brightsong. She fears that his planned journey may separate them for far longer than he expects, and asks an experienced founder to challenge his decision to travel alone.

Silver-marked founder (Supporting)

Appears from the start

An experienced founder marked in silver. She worries that Hal's appetite for risk may conflict with his duty to Brightsong, and Noth asks her to challenge his plan to leave the settlement alone.

Dale (Supporting)

Also known as Kinslayer druid

Appears from the start

A druid Kinslayer and an alternate-world version of Hal. Newly free from Rinbast's control and observation, he understands the dangerous appetite for growth that comes with Beastborn power and questions how Hal's expanding alliances may affect it.

Hal's absent former inner counterpart. Hal fears that a prolonged separation could put Besal at risk, making the expected length of his journey more consequential.

Gold dragon (Supporting)

An allied dragon who carries Hal toward the ruined route to the Abyss. He regards Hal as part of his dragon family because of their shared dragonfire and warns that the Abyss stains souls permanently.

Brewmaster soul aider (Supporting)

A resident soul aider who brews drinks for Brightsong and can create food through magic. The creature collaborates with the settlement's food mage.

Elora's support familiar (Supporting)

Elora's apparent familiar and partner in an unusual Wildmaster bond. She supports Elora as the ranger begins recovering after the return of a missing soul piece.

Elora (Supporting)

A ranger and familiar handler in Brightsong who has recently recovered a missing piece of her soul. She is beginning to heal emotionally with support from her soul-aider, though the exact balance of their Wildmaster bond remains unusual.

Val (Supporting)

Also known as Kinslayer, Hal's alternate self

A Kinslayer and alternate version of Hal whose recent training restored his ability to combine multiple Beastborn essences. Her instruction has made him more adaptable as he travels toward the ruined city and its lost Abyss route.

Mira (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 8

One of Brightsong's combat leaders, involved in managing the settlement's defenses during the worsening winter. She joins Hal and Angram in drawing patrols closer to the settlement's protection when the surrounding corruption becomes more active.

Angram (Supporting)

Also known as Ranger leader

The commander of Brightsong's rangers. As winter corruption grows more dangerous, he reports on the limits of the mountain patrols and helps pull the settlement's scouts back toward safer ground.

Ashera (Supporting)

A protective fighter whose Royal Guard class may strengthen an entire party's defenses. She volunteers for the force being assembled to enter the newly manifested tower and contain its threat to Brightsong.

White dragon (Supporting)

Also known as Gold dragon's daughter, Hal's dragon ally

First appears in chapter 11

The gold dragon's daughter and one of Hal's dragonfire allies. She volunteers to enter the tower with Brightsong's strongest fighters, arguing that the first expedition should establish the true scale of the danger.

Restored dwarf (Supporting)

Also known as Steelheart heir, Dwarf party leader

A recovered dwarf warrior whose returned soul fragment has allowed him to regain combat levels. His defensive strength and leadership make him a leading candidate for the first organized expedition into the tower.

Unknown soul aider (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 20

An unknown soul aider caught repeatedly stealing bones and other materials from Hal's cottage. He has remarkable storage capacity and can open escape routes through barriers, but his identity, origin, and reason for reaching Brightsong are initially unclear.

Hermes (Supporting)

Also known as Hal's soul aider

First appears in chapter 21

The unknown soul aider caught stealing from Hal, now given the name Hermes after accepting Hal's offer of shelter, food, and honest work. His equipped form grants insulation and vitality, and Hal begins a new soul-companion bond with him.

Drow ritualist (Supporting)

Also known as Besal's mentor, Drow leader

First appears in chapter 27

Besal's mentor and the leader of a separate expedition investigating an outside threat. She accompanies Besal and a reality-aware helper into a tomb in the Fathomways, where they locate and awaken an ancient lich.

Ancient lich (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 27

An undead mage from a lineage predating Aldim's collapse. Besal's group awakens him in his Fathomways tomb, hoping his ancient knowledge may serve their mission, but his willingness to cooperate has not yet been established.

Oracle-like helper (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 27

A reality-aware member of Besal's expedition who helps the drow ritualist locate and awaken an ancient lich. Her unusual perception supports the group's search, although her larger aims and the limits of her knowledge remain unclear.

Ebon Star leatherworker (Minor)

First appears in chapter 28

A capable leatherworker and member of the Ebon Star contingent accompanying Hal's tower party. When Val considers learning a weapon skill, this fighter recommends a one-handed throwing spear that could complement her existing magic.

Ebon Star scout leader (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 29

An Ebon Star advancement adviser and experienced tower scout. She explains that advanced skills reflect a person's repeated choices, and helps Hal evaluate options that could better connect his swordsmanship with his Beastborn magic.

Umbral observer (Minor)

First appears in chapter 33

A partly insubstantial projection that reveals it has secretly accompanied Hal and Val. Its distant observation ability may be teachable to Hermes, but the projection's wider role and the full limits of the technique remain uncertain.

Tiefling assassin (Supporting)

Also known as Public bard

First appears in chapter 34

An experienced assassin concealed behind the public identity of a Merkmire bard. He kills a corrupt councilman and pressures Councilman Dantra to redirect blame, hoping to weaken the repressive council before his feared mistress arrives.

Councilman Dantra (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 34

A member of Merkmire's ruling council who survives the tiefling assassin's coercion. He refuses to support the proposed deception and vows revenge, turning the covert struggle against the council into a direct personal conflict.

Coblin sister (Minor)

First appears in chapter 34

A sickly coblin who discovers a magical transport box with her brother while they seek a gift for Hal. She activates the device during a fall and vanishes, leaving her brother with the emptied box and no clear way to recover her.

Fifth Cohort centurion (Supporting)

Also known as Senior Legion observer

First appears in chapter 35

A senior Legion officer preparing his cohort for an unnatural winter storm and a gathering of the twelve Shiverglades peoples. Loyal to the Legion, he nevertheless questions whether it has the right to repeat its old judgment against the lost Thirteenth.

Wind-caller centurion (Supporting)

Also known as Junior Legion weather-reader

A newly elevated Legion centurion whose weather sense has warned the cohort about storms and corrupted regions. His commander trusts his instincts, and acts on his warning that the worsening ice storm is not natural.

Mana Tree (Supporting)

Also known as Protective tree

First appears in chapter 37

A shard-stabilizing guardian rooted in a warm, fertile glade within Brightsong. It welcomes visitors through its guardians and is connected to Noth, though its bond with Hal is much stronger and central to its protective role.

Coblin healer (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 55

A coblin healer who joins a six-member monster-farm party for lower-risk experience and commits to daily training. The healer treats wounds, directs attacks, and hopes to cure the aether sickness affecting many coblins.

Lich's assistant (Supporting)

Also known as Vampire

First appears in chapter 54

The ancient lich's assistant, found reduced to ash after exposure to sunlight. He is a vampire rather than the daylight-resistant hybrid he believes himself to be, and blood can begin restoring him.

Elora's thunderbore (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 56

A lightning-wielding thunderbore tamed by Elora as her second familiar. Its tusks can shape electrical writing, allowing it to communicate in words.

Mack (Supporting)

Also known as Vampire, Lich's assistant

First appears in chapter 57

The lich's vampire assistant, now identified as Mack. Blood restores him from ash, but direct sunlight destroys his body again, so the expedition must revive and shelter him in darkness.
