In short (whole book)
Hal leaves Brightsong seeking answers in the Abyss, only to carry a corrupted captured tower home. It erupts into the Tower of Blight, trapping the settlement in a race to clear its shifting floors before the corruption spreads. Hal organizes expeditions, develops anti-blight equipment, and commits resources to a future citadel and the restoration of Val's missing core. When the tower attacks the Mana Tree through Hal's own bonds, he reverses the connection, heals the Tree, gains a tin-rank core, and helps Brightsong weaken the tower from outside. Hal, Noth, Mira, Ashera, Elora, and the restored dwarf make the final ascent and destroy the last blight core. The collapsing tower displaces them into an unknown underground network, where most claim relics and Hal gains the Crown of the Bright King. The tower vanishes from Brightsong, but twelve tribal forces arrive while Hal's party remains missing.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Hal founded Brightsong in the Shiverglades and became known as both a Beastborn and the Bright King. He and his allies defeated the Archmage twice, but Aldim remains threatened by deeper corruption and by Rinbast. Hal leads the Bravers Guild alongside his partner Noth, while Mira, Ashera, Elora, Angram, Vorax, and other companions help defend the growing settlement. His powers include dragonfire shared with allied dragons and a bond with Brightsong's protective tree. Besal, once Hal's inner counterpart, is now separate and involved in another mission. Dale and Val are alternate versions of Hal shaped by different worlds and histories. With Brightsong established but still vulnerable, Hal remains driven to learn the truth behind Aldim's calamity, his binding, and the title of Bright King.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Hal leaves Brightsong alone to find a council trapped in the Abyss and seek answers about Aldim's condition. Noth lends him the captured Archmage tower as a portable shelter. The old Abyss route beneath a ruined city is empty, so Hal sleeps inside the tower before returning home. During that rest, the surrounding corruption secretly enters the structure and twists its wards. Hal returns to Brightsong with a lead on another gate, unaware of what he is carrying until the tower charm deforms and places him under a lethal countdown. He throws it clear of the settlement, but it expands into the Tower of Blight. Brightsong's protective structure contains the tower without removing it. Hal receives a quest requiring him to clear every floor and defeat its final defender before the corruption overwhelms his home.
Story so far - through chapter 18 (this book)
Hal organizes eighteen volunteers into three linked parties for Brightsong's first tower expedition. Inside, nearly everyone acquires stacking blight that weakens them and worsens with injury, while Hal's protective blessing clears his own exposure. A transport platform separates the parties and leaves the first arrivals badly hurt. Hal reorganizes the force into scouting, defense, and damage groups so they can avoid unnecessary battles and recover three sigils. Taking the last sigil triggers a mass ambush, but coordinated ultimate abilities destroy the attackers. Hal gives Noth a monster card designed to benefit a fighter carrying blight. Vorax then scouts ahead disguised as one of the tower's creatures and uses the sigils to open the reward chamber. After each adventurer claims equipment or a schematic, a portal returns the entire alliance to Brightsong and a severe winter storm.
Story so far - through chapter 31 (this book)
The expedition discovers that almost a week passed outside during what felt like only a short stay in the tower. Blight takes days to fade, forcing Hal to consider smaller rotating parties. While preparing new anti-blight equipment, he catches an unknown soul aider stealing from his cottage. Hal offers shelter and work instead of punishment, names him Hermes, and later admits him to the Bravers Guild. Hermes helps Hal analyze and craft with monster materials, including a lantern that protects a party against a selected monster family and a powerful spellcasting focus. Hal returns with Val and Ebon Star allies. Their body paint, the lantern, and Beastborn abilities reduce their exposure as they clear the second floor. Hal advances his sword skill into Beast Blade, allowing his weapon attacks to weaken resistance to his magic. The reward chamber gives the party better weapons and presents Hal with a quest tablet for constructing the Dawn Citadel.
Story so far - through chapter 40 (this book)
The Dawn Citadel quest promises an empire-founding skill after eight costly construction stages. Hal and Val continue through the third floor and learn a spell that adapts their defenses against recently used magic. Hal also accepts a fusion quest to rebuild Val's missing monster core, committing himself to preserve rare cores for her. Elsewhere, Besal, a drow ritualist, and their reality-aware companion awaken an ancient lich in search of knowledge about an outside threat. Merkmire approaches rebellion under a repressive council, a coblin sister vanishes through a transport box, and the twelve Shiverglades peoples gather to judge whether Brightsong represents the lost Thirteenth. In the tower, Hal's exhausted party falls through a damaged door into a peaceful echo of Rinbast and the future Archmage's early hopes for Aldim. They escape to the reward room, where Val claims a relic trident, Brightsong's first known relic.
Story so far - through chapter 45 (this book)
Hal's party returns to find the tower's corrupted ground spreading. Brightsong adopts rotating single-party expeditions, but Hal grows sleepless, gaunt, and dangerously fixated on entering the tower. After he drills through a tower wall to save Angram and helps later teams advance, his unexplained decline becomes critical. Hermes and Brightsong's defenders finally stop him. A quest reveals that distance from the Mana Tree and lack of restorative sleep are unraveling the bonds sustaining Hal's monster core and life. The Tree is also withering because a corruption parasite has invaded their connection. In a dragon-like spiritual form, Hal tears the parasite from the Tree's inner light. Instead of merely destroying it, he forces the Tree's blessing through the corruption network and back into the Tower of Blight. The attack clears lesser branches and gravely wounds the tower, while Hal shields the Tree from the backlash and collapses.
Story so far - through chapter 51 (this book)
Hal awakens after four days with a tin-rank monster core, stronger spiritual channels, and Dragon Spiritual Form. The Mana Tree has recovered, while the tower remains dangerous and an expedition is still inside. Hal strengthens Noth's connection to the Tree and resumes the battle from outside rather than entering again. Meanwhile, Besal's group secures the ancient lich as an unwilling guide to hidden records, despite his attempted betrayal. Elora continues hunting for Brightsong, and Ashera's tower party nearly falls to a powerful blight golem after fungal wounds spread contamination through the floor. Moonlit fissures created by Hal and the Tree cleanse their blight and weaken the golem enough to kill it. The Tree then matures and speaks, explaining that the corruption needs living hosts. Its continuing pressure makes tower expeditions faster and safer, although the tower keeps adding floors before anyone can reach its top.
Story so far - through chapter 59 (this book)
In Merkmire, an assassin sent against the tiefling tavern proprietor walks into a prepared trap and dies by his own poisoned weapon. The tiefling reveals himself as a senior Assassin's Guild master, recruits three surviving trainees, and prepares a forbidden counterstroke against Councilman Dantra. Brightsong expands its farms while Elora tames a lightning-wielding thunderbore as a second familiar. Besal's expedition restores the lich's vampire assistant, Mack, from ash and travels through the lich's hidden fortress. The group retrieves a bottle containing part of the lich's stored memories, but learns that the knowledge was divided among an unknown number of files. The first file supplies a translocation spell and the location of the next cache. Their attempt to travel there leaves them outside an unfamiliar walled city whose barrier blocked their intended arrival, so the search for information about the outside threat remains incomplete.
Story so far - through chapter 62 (this book)
Hal rebuilds his equipment with Hermes and gradually teaches the Mana Tree to sustain its own pressure against the Tower of Blight. The arrival of the twelve tribal forces is only days away, and Hal fears they will mistake the tower for evidence that Brightsong serves the corruption. Two Legion centurions secretly inspect the settlement and independently determine that Brightsong has contained an invading tower and fought the blight, though political factions may still use the crisis as grounds for attack. With other parties having cleared a route, Hal assembles Noth, Mira, Ashera, Elora, and the restored dwarf for the final assault. Elora brings her thunderbore, while the two allied dragons remain outside to defend Brightsong. Rested and supplied with food, cider, and coffee, the six-person party enters the tower before the approaching tribes can reach the settlement.
Story so far - through chapter 67 (this book)
Elora's thunderbore carries the final party through a mass of tower creatures. Hal opens a fissure into the Mana Tree's silver passages, allowing the group to bypass unfinished floors and reach the top. There they confront a level-88 abomination carrying the final blight core. Hal's Bright Lance combines both allied dragons' fire with spirit to shatter the core, and the party destroys the creature each time it reforms. The tower collapses before they can leave. Hal redirects their fall through a Tree passage, saving everyone but displacing them into an unknown underground crystal network. A treasure chest grants the restored dwarf ancient royal armor, Noth a relic scythe, Elora a relic bow, Mira a relic spear, and Hal the Crown of the Bright King before revealing itself as a creature and departing. Hal also receives a blight-heart fragment and enough construction seals to complete the Dawn Citadel's first-stage materials. The cleansed tower vanishes from Brightsong, but Hal's party has no route home as twelve tribal forces converge on the settlement. Hermes, the dragons, and Brightsong's remaining defenders prepare to meet them.
How does it end? (ending)
Hal, Noth, Mira, Ashera, Elora, and the restored dwarf survive the Tower of Blight's collapse by reaching one of the Mana Tree's passages, but emerge in an unfamiliar underground crystal network with no known route to Brightsong. The restored dwarf gains ancient royal armor, Noth a relic scythe, Elora a relic bow, and Mira a relic spear. Hal's tarnished crown becomes the Crown of the Bright King. His rewards also include a blight-heart fragment and fifty construction seals, completing the materials for the first stage of the Dawn Citadel. At Brightsong, the cleansed tower disappears. Hermes, the two allied dragons, and the remaining defenders must face twelve converging tribal forces without Hal's final party. Val's promised core restoration remains incomplete, Besal's expedition has recovered only one of an unknown number of memory-files, the missing coblin sister has not returned, and Merkmire's rebellion and assassin conflict remain unresolved.
