Joe (Protagonist)
Appears from the start
A Tower of Ritualists member whose artificial mana channels restore his spellcasting at a severe cost. After becoming an Emperor of Mana, Joe must repair damaged abilities while limiting himself to seven further skill gains or tier advances.
Pete (Supporting)
Also known as Grandmaster Pete
Appears from the start
A Grandmaster ritualist who helps conduct Joe's artificial-channel procedure. Pete is preparing to consume a mythic core and attempt his own ascension while Joe recovers from the painful restoration.
Jenny (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
Joe's assistant at the Tower of Ritualists. Jenny inadvertently leaves the ascension room unsecured, allowing interested outsiders to converge on the room after Pete's advancement.
Queen CleoCatra (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 2
The source of a pending karmic remapping reward that Joe hopes can help repair his damaged skills without threatening the narrow safety margin of his artificial channels.
Mir (Supporting)

Joe's Sage elementalist mentor, who meets him at a concealed entrance beneath a memorial on Vanaheim. Mir knows what lies beyond the entrance but initially withholds the facility's purpose.
Nathaniel (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 5
A gnome who leads the hidden Inverted Tower and says he founded the shared Scholar and Occultist profession line. Nathaniel offers Joe membership only if he accepts an obligation to protect Vanaheim from its sleeping world boss.
Jormungandr (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 5
Vanaheim's sleeping world boss, whose continued dormancy depends on the world's cheese-processing system. If awakened, Jormungandr would destroy and convert living worlds, making its containment the Inverted Tower's central responsibility.
Cookie (Minor)
First appears in chapter 9
The Tower of Ritualists' chef, quartermaster, and seller of ritual diagrams. Cookie trades materials for cheese and helps Joe assemble the components needed for a more flexible combat style after the ambush.
crystalline whale (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 14
An enormous, near-transparent guardian of the Ambiguous Cascade. The crystalline whale manipulates the waterfall for concealment, movement, and powerful attacks when Joe diverts its water.
Boris (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 16
An elderly, excommunicated scholar who lives and works at the Grand Pathfinder's Hall. Boris wants genuine readmission to the Society of Scholars, not merely a technical device that nullifies his ban.
Tatum (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 19
Joe's deity and the intended recipient of a shrine at the heart of the Ambiguous Cascade. Claiming the site for Tatum will secure Joe's third place of power for an ongoing objective.
high priestess of Tatum (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 21
A dwarven high priestess who serves Tatum in Novusheim. She heals and stabilizes Joe after he reaches the temple with a severe wound.
Grandmaster Stu (Minor)
First appears in chapter 22
A dwarf who has advanced to Grandmaster of Sarcasm. Stu uses a valuable alloy offering to arrange a thorough cleanup in Novusheim, discharging the remaining karmic debt created by Joe's earlier departure.
Nixie (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 26
A sect co-operator who helps present Joe with a large coffee-production facility on Jotunheim. Nixie has helped establish the operation, but the new facility still needs a dependable supply of beans.
Joe's coffee elemental (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 27
Joe's summoned coffee ally, which reacts with alarm when it sees the newly completed coffee-production facility.
Fari (Supporting)
Also known as Grandmaster Fari
First appears in chapter 29
The Grandmaster leading an expedition to the Jotun's respawn site. Fari's group intends to secure its Mythic Core, an objective Joe expects will intensify the political conflict on Vanaheim.
Sage Nokomis (Minor)
First appears in chapter 39
A corrupted vitalist and Skill Sage who introduces herself during the strike force's advance through the Inverted Tower tunnels. Her abilities concern both life and death, placing her among the allied sages confronting the breach.
Durax (Antagonist)
First appears in chapter 41
A secluded class sage and skull collector who halts the fighting inside the Inverted Tower. Durax claims no interest in the factional dispute itself and says his present goal only temporarily aligns with that of an unnamed woman.
Sir Liz
First appears in chapter 37
An old Society of Scholars contact who has been trying to reach Joe covertly through Boris.
Liz (Antagonist)
Also known as Beth, Sir Liz
First appears in chapter 43
The seller Joe knew as Beth, now identified as Liz. She says her shop identity concealed her role in Vanaheim's crisis and that she used long-standing karmic links to influence its residents.
Jackson (Supporting)
First appears in chapter 46
Joe's friend, returning to Vanaheim after the Council restores bifrost travel. Jackson arrives from Muspelheim and explains that the earlier shutdown left him stranded there.
