In short (whole book)

Joe rebuilds his damaged magic after an artificial-channel ritual leaves him only seven safe advancement steps. He joins the Inverted Tower, develops new combat rituals, claims the Ambiguous Cascade, binds a deific ritual orb to his karmic luck, and advances by teaching other ritualists. A factional war on Vanaheim proves to be cover for an assault on the sleeping Jormungandr. Liz has manipulated both sides and joins Durax in forcing Joe toward a lever that would awaken the world boss and redirect the bifrost to hell. Joe destroys the lever with true damage, saving Vanaheim, but Liz permanently kills Nathaniel and then kills Joe. Joe respawns after completing an uncapped Grandmaster foundation. Mir survives, Jenny remains trapped as a cheese sculpture, and the Council restores bifrost travel to Asgard. The factions accept a ceasefire, Jackson returns from Muspelheim, and Nathaniel's final letter remains unread.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Joe's earlier history included Vanaheim, Jotunheim, and the city of Novusheim, with the bifrost providing travel between worlds. Fari, Queen CleoCatra, Grandmaster Snow, and Blood Rites were also established parts of that history.

Story so far - through chapter 7 (this book)

Joe awakens after an artificial-channel ritual restores his access to mana but leaves him in severe pain. The repair can withstand only seven new skills or tier advances, while his new tribulation pressures him to accept opportunities. He becomes an Emperor of Mana and begins reconnecting damaged abilities by manually reconstructing their mana paths. Pete uses a mythic core to become Sage Pete, remains politically neutral, and gives the Tower of Ritualists greater protection. Joe's profession leads him to the hidden Inverted Tower, where Nathaniel explains that Vanaheim's cheese economy keeps Jormungandr asleep. Joe becomes a Codex Keeper and swears to help protect that system. Soon afterward, mind-controlled masters attack him. With Mir observing and an allied archer assisting, Joe restores enough of Omnivolt and Planar Shift to survive. The controller remains unidentified, leaving Joe with improved mobility but many damaged high-rank spells and an unknown enemy.

Story so far - through chapter 14 (this book)

Back at the Tower of Ritualists, Joe pays Sage Pete to investigate the controlled attackers and gains access to Nathaniel's private library refuge. He purchases ritual diagrams from Cookie and develops three complementary combat clusters built around forced movement, heat and friction, and escalating blood loss. Inscription Momentum lets him produce prepared rituals at extraordinary speed, but a week of work leaves him dangerously depleted. Joe travels to Midgard, advances four of his five Ritualist core skills to master rank, and gains a method for embedding rituals in living targets. His excessive characteristics now overwhelm his inhibitor gear. In the Forest of Chlorophyll Chaos, he discovers the Ambiguous Cascade and the requirements for a stronger master-rank stabilizer. The cascade is guarded by a huge crystalline whale that uses water as armor, transport, and weaponry. Joe's first attack tests his new clusters but cannot overcome the guardian, so he withdraws to prepare a more effective counter.

Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)

Joe gathers aspects, recruits his coven to prepare pseudo-master rituals, and returns to the Ambiguous Cascade. He drains the crystal whale's supporting water, identifies a vulnerable notch in its fluke, and shatters it with repeated ritual impacts. After recovering its artifact-ranked core and body as aspects, he reaches the cascade's center and claims a shrine for Tatum, securing his third place of power. His inhibitor then fails completely, making ordinary movement hazardous on Midgard. A hostile Vanaheim expedition accuses him of supporting its rivals and seeking a world-boss core. A master martial artist inflicts a nearly fatal conceptual wound, forcing Joe to flee through the bifrost. He accepts a body art that improves control as his health falls and barely reaches Tatum's temple in Novusheim. The high priestess heals him, but the hostile expedition remains active and Joe still lacks a safe way to suppress his physical power.

Story so far - through chapter 28 (this book)

On Jotunheim, Tatum directs Joe to bind his deity-granted growth weapon and seek a cat. Queen CleoCatra offers several karmic rewards, and Joe chooses to replace his ruined Neutrality Aura. The remapping produces Aurora of Soothing Destruction, an aura that cleans and converts matter, supports allies, and harms combatants. Cleo also binds Joe's Deific Ritual Orb to his karmic luck, creating a future route to true damage. Joe reaches 499 in every characteristic but delays the threshold. Nixie helps unveil a large coffee facility that has no reliable beans. Joe's coffee elemental returns from a planar conflict in which coffee and tea are losing ground to kombucha. He shelters five weakened coffee elementals through permanent summoning arrangements at the facility, then begins a free-coffee campaign intended to build demand and strengthen them. The business has suppliers and workers, but its broader rollout and the elementals' planar war remain unresolved.

Story so far - through chapter 36 (this book)

Joe secures a Novusheim license for the coffee venture, then helps close the teleportation network behind Fari's expedition as it pursues the respawned Jotun's Mythic Core. Expecting the core to ignite conflict, he returns to an armed and divided Vanaheim. Sage Pete directs him away from sage-level fighting and toward Grandmaster advancement through teaching. Nathaniel clarifies the Codex Keepers' duty to restrict dangerous knowledge, while Mir gives Joe a map of the Inverted Tower. Joe then teaches Inscription Momentum under stringent oaths and a large master-rank ritual. The lesson spreads the skill, transfers additional knowledge unexpectedly, and earns Joe valuable advancement. An alchemical ritualist uses one of Joe's lore books to become a grandmaster, and Joe spends further time advising other candidates. He ends this phase with stronger teaching, inscription, stamina conversion, and Ritual Circles skills, plus promises of future mastery credit, but the approaching political crisis has not passed.

Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)

Boris warns that the Society of Scholars has branded Nathaniel an apostate and joined a plan to destroy him and his work. Sage Pete confirms that the public factional struggle is cover for an assault on the Inverted Tower and Jormungandr. A planet-wide strike hits the Tower of Ritualists, forcing Pete to activate its single-use sage defense and remain behind. Joe guides an allied strike force through a surviving hidden entrance, with Jenny insisting on joining. Inside, machismo-coated penguins attack, traditionalist sages block the route, and Joe discovers that many enemies are controlled through forced karmic bonds. Durax, a skull-collecting class sage, stops the battle and tests Joe against two artifact-ranked penguins. Joe kills one with an internal ritual, but machismo transforms Jenny into an apparently inanimate cheese sculpture. Joe preserves her, unable to determine whether she can respawn. Durax then reveals that his true target is a uniquely rare gnome's skull.

Story so far - through chapter 44 (this book)

Durax and a shadow-binding ally seize the Inverted Tower, hold Mir and Nathaniel captive, and demand that Joe operate a protected lever that only a Codex Keeper can use. Joe first overloads a binding enchantment to die and escape, but the coercion continues. Liz reveals herself as the hidden manipulator behind Vanaheim's conflict. She has cultivated karmic links to influential residents so she can wake Jormungandr, redirect the bifrost to hell, and rejoin exiles of her kind. When Joe resists, she threatens Nathaniel's permanent death. Joe draws power from the Eclipsing Aurora Chalice and learns Absolute Conversion, allowing him to create true damage. Instead of completing the lever's operation, he channels that damage through his karmic ritual orb and destroys the mechanism and its safeguards. Jormungandr remains asleep and the immediate catastrophe is prevented. Liz retaliates by permanently killing Nathaniel, after which Durax takes Nathaniel's head and leaves.

Story so far - through chapter 46 (this book)

With Liz attacking him, Joe spends his mastery merits and completes the Emperor of Mana Ascendant Foundation. Ritual Circles reaches Grandmaster rank, his accumulated damage and bindings are purged, and his class level is no longer capped. Liz kills him with a true-damage strike, but Joe respawns at the Tower of Ritualists. His mythic karmic shroud collar is destroyed, while his new foundation leaves him physically restored and publicly recognized as Grandmaster Joe. Mir also survives because permanently killing him could release the elemental storm contained within him. He brings Joe an unread letter from Nathaniel. At the Council of Sages, Joe explains that an outside force manipulated both factions. The Council votes 104 to 98 to end bifrost suppression, establish Vanaheim as the principal route to Asgard, and restore links with Midgard and Muspelheim. Traditionalists and ascensionists accept a ceasefire and begin repairs. Jackson returns from Muspelheim, while Jenny's condition, Liz's status, Durax's purpose, and Nathaniel's final message remain unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Joe destroys the protected lever before Jormungandr can awaken, but Liz retaliates by permanently killing Nathaniel. Durax takes Nathaniel's head and departs. Joe then completes the Emperor of Mana Ascendant Foundation, advances to Grandmaster, and loses his level cap. Liz kills him with true damage, yet he respawns at the Tower of Ritualists with his mythic karmic shroud collar destroyed. Mir survives and brings Nathaniel's unread letter. Jenny remains preserved as a cheese sculpture, with her ability to return unresolved. The Council votes to restore bifrost travel, makes Vanaheim the principal hub for Asgard, and accepts a ceasefire between the former factions. Jackson returns from Muspelheim. Liz's status, Durax's larger purpose, Fari's expedition, Boris's reinstatement, the coffee elementals' conflict, and Joe's new vulnerability remain open.
