Unintended Cultivator, Volume Four recap

Sen seeks the Five-Fold Body Transformation Manual while worsening anger threatens his judgment. Clear Spring cannot release its sealed copy, and a dragon purges the heart demon driving Sen toward violence and self-destruction. In the capital, Sen agrees to help a princess escape marriage to Choi Zhi Peng, survives sect attacks, forms an abnormal second core layer, and wages war on the Shadow Eagle Talon Syndicate. Golden Phoenix has no manual, so Sen poisons the Syndicate's nascent-soul head, exposes Choi's cruelty, and forces the king to confess grave crimes. The prince kills the king and a rival brother and becomes ruler, while the princess rejects Sen for engineering the confrontation. Sen releases Feng's watcher from duty and leaves her with the improving fire cultivator. With the new king quietly supported by senior sect leaders, Sen and Falling Leaf depart for the northwestern wilderness to seek a mad nascent-soul cultivator and the last credible manual lead.

Previously: Sen became an independent cultivator under the guidance of Feng Ming, Kho Jaw-Long, and Caihong. Falling Leaf, a Ghost Panther transformed into human form, became his travelling companion and chosen family. Sen's unusual cultivation and readiness to protect those close to him earned him formidable enemies as well as a dangerous reputation. Feng assigned a covert cultivator to watch over him, but her manipulation of Sen in pursuit of her estranged brother damaged their trust. As this volume begins, Sen travels with Falling Leaf, the watcher, and a reluctant fire cultivator sent under an Order agreement. His teachers remain powerful offstage protectors, but Sen must make his own decisions about the threats ahead.

Sen's anger has intensified since forming his core. After repeated spirit-beast attacks, he threatens war against the bear-cat beasts, alarming Falling Leaf and the rest of the party. Falling Leaf also warns that his unfinished Five-Fold Body Transformation is dangerous without its manual. At Clear Spring, Sen discovers that the sect possesses the manual but cannot retrieve it from a time-accelerated room sealed from within. The sect patriarch instead asks him to spend time with the sentient spring. Sen gains a broader understanding of water qi and large, interdependent techniques, but the spring warns that he is confining his anger rather than resolving it. If he continues, that anger may become a permanent part of him. His search remains urgent, and the inaccessible manual means he must continue toward the capital.

A hostile Clear Spring cultivator hires professionals to cripple Sen. Sen defeats them, but the patriarch refuses to pursue the noble patron because of his family, destroying Sen's trust in the sect. Elsewhere, Caihong breaks the defenses of the Temple of Eternity's Edge, kills its fleeing leader, and ends the cult's control of its captives. Sen resumes his northern journey. A Clear Spring core cultivator follows the party and eventually admits that she wants Sen's help with a dangerous noble-family problem. She claims her family may be able to obtain the manual, but Sen refuses to risk his short remaining time on mortal politics. Recognizing that his worsening rage could provoke disaster in the capital, he leaves the watcher and fire cultivator with supplies. Falling Leaf joins him as he turns west into the wilds, seeking a violent confrontation that might show him how to master his anger.

Sen and Falling Leaf fight increasingly dangerous spirit beasts, but combat only drains his anger temporarily. After spirit oxen shelter him while a severe leg wound heals, their herd mother directs him toward a barren western region where he may find resolution or death. There an overwhelmingly powerful wind dragon traps the pair and forces Sen into an impossible battle. Sen unleashes his rage in a desperate final attack and survives. Within the dragon's mind, he learns that his anger, paranoia, and self-destructive impulses formed a heart demon. The ordeal has purged it, and the dragon chose not to kill him once it was gone. The dragon confirms that Sen's incomplete body transformation remains fatal and cannot supply the missing instruction. Sen therefore survives his immediate inner crisis with greater calm, but the search for the manual is still urgent.

Sen and Falling Leaf return to the waiting party, and the journey to the capital resumes. Sen establishes conditional trust with Feng's watcher and gives the reluctant fire cultivator a choice between leaving and genuinely training. The man stays, improves under daily instruction, and becomes a more useful companion. The Clear Spring cultivator explains that her family arranged an unwanted marriage and proposes Sen as a more advantageous alternative. Near the capital, she admits that she cannot guarantee the manual and would rather kill the groom than submit. Sen still agrees to help if she commits every available family resource to his search, with a three-month limit. At the southern gate, officials reveal that she is a princess. Sen has now entered the mortal politics he hoped to avoid, using a public courtship strategy to oppose her forced marriage while seeking the manual that may save his life.

The princess's brother approaches Sen after a diviner warns that Sen could bring fortune or disaster. The prince supports ending her arranged marriage to Choi Zhi Peng and begins teaching Sen about the capital's political balance. House Choi is a great-house rival of the throne, making any direct move dangerous. Meanwhile, Steel Griffin cultivators try to seize Falling Leaf as leverage. She and Sen kill the attackers, but Sen initially avoids blaming the whole sect. When an elder later attempts to intimidate them, he wounds and detains her. A nascent-soul Steel Griffin leader intervenes and accepts the elder's loss of assets and a century of confinement. The leader is Feng's brother and agrees to contain the dispute. The prince also commits to helping with the manual. Sen has gained political allies and avoided a sect war, but his alliance with the princess has made Falling Leaf and the rest of his group targets.

Weeks pass while Sen waits for progress on the manual and trains his fire cultivator companion. During meditation on his unusual Heavenly Shadow cultivation, Sen unconsciously draws upon stored cores and forms a second core layer. Four cultivators attack during the advancement, but he maintains a defensive vortex, completes the breakthrough, and kills them. Their markings identify them as members of the Shadow Eagle Talon Syndicate, a criminal organization hired by an unknown patron. Further attacks follow. Sen stops evading the organization, interrogates a poisoned-crossbow assassin, and orders the Syndicate to leave the city. He publicly embraces the name Judgment's Gale as part of that threat. The manual search remains stalled, while Sen's abnormal advancement and open campaign introduce a new capital enemy whose employer is still unknown.

Sen and Feng's watcher cooperate against more Syndicate attackers, narrowly escaping a destructive assault by the organization's bearded nascent-soul head. Senior city cultivators then forbid that leader from personally killing Sen. Sen raids Syndicate properties under concealment, kills its personnel, strips its resources, and returns identifiable stolen goods. Most of House Choi is then massacred by a single powerful cultivator. Sen and the prince suspect the Syndicate head retaliated against the family for initiating the conflict. Choi Zhi Peng survives, and the king still orders the princess's wedding to proceed. Sen meets the Golden Phoenix matriarch, beginning a temporary intimate relationship, but she confirms that her sect no longer has the Five-Fold Body Transformation Manual. The principal capital lead has failed. Sen resolves to eliminate the Syndicate and end the forced-marriage crisis before leaving to pursue the manual elsewhere.

After preparing in secret, Sen infiltrates the Syndicate's concealed cache, kills its guards, and plants a linked array of custom poisons. He deliberately summons the nascent-soul leader into the trap and destroys the man's qi channels before killing him. Sen conceals the method even from the senior cultivators who arrive afterward, while the Golden Phoenix matriarch agrees to push the surviving Syndicate members out of crime or out of the city. The organization is effectively broken. Before killing its leader, Sen voices his belief that he may be accelerated toward ascension to serve an unknown power. He has removed the immediate criminal threat to his companions, but the patron behind the original contract remains unidentified and the deeper cause of his abnormal cultivation is still open.

Feng's watcher and Falling Leaf abduct Choi Zhi Peng and free a child held in his secret torture room. Under interrogation, Choi reveals why the king insists on the marriage: House Choi has evidence that the king trafficked people to demonic cultivators and abused and murdered boys. Sen condemns Choi to die sealed in a stone pit, ending him as a prospective husband. Sen then enters the palace, subdues the guards, and forces the king to confess publicly. The princess's brother kills his father and then kills a rival brother who attacks him for the throne. At the princess's plea, he spares their mother and orders her imprisoned for knowing of the king's crimes. The prince becomes the apparent new ruler. The succession is decided, but the royal family is shattered.

The new king accepts the need for his father's removal but remains angry with Sen and does not banish him. The princess confronts Sen over the deaths and rejects him after his anger turns their dispute cruel, even though the forced marriage is over. Sen recognizes that purging his heart demon did not make his anger harmless. He apologizes to Feng's watcher for his earlier self-righteousness and releases her from Feng's assignment. She stays in the capital with the improving fire cultivator, the fortified house, and Sen's carefully prepared elixir for his advancement. Sen quietly secures support for the new king from the Golden Phoenix matriarch and another nascent-soul cultivator. Falling Leaf chooses to accompany Sen despite the danger. Together they leave for the northwestern wilderness to seek a mad nascent-soul cultivator who may possess the last credible lead to the Five-Fold Body Transformation Manual. Sen's fatal cultivation problem and the force behind his abnormal progress remain unresolved.

Sen breaks the power of the Shadow Eagle Talon Syndicate and kills its nascent-soul head with a prepared poison trap. He then removes Choi Zhi Peng and forces the king to confess to trafficking people to demonic cultivators and abusing and murdering boys. The prince kills his father and an attacking brother, takes the throne, and receives quiet support from two senior sect powers. The princess is free from the marriage but rejects Sen because of his coercive intervention and the trauma it caused. The queen is imprisoned. Sen apologizes to the new king and to Feng's watcher for manipulating others while claiming moral certainty. He releases the watcher from Feng's assignment and leaves her in the capital with the fire cultivator, a fortified house, and an elixir for his advancement. Falling Leaf chooses to accompany Sen into the northwestern wilderness. They depart to find a dangerous nascent-soul cultivator who may hold the only remaining lead to the manual needed to prevent Sen's incomplete body transformation from killing him.
