Maulkin (Protagonist)

A Solar Eternal, archer, and trusted companion of Maulkin. After Araphel's return, Mercy accompanies Maulkin and Asher to Talon's Keep and tells Gunnhild that Saren is dead.

Saren (Supporting)

Maulkin's former partner, whose reported death predates the opening of this book. Her loss remains central to Maulkin's anger toward Briar and to the personal cost he carries into the war against Araphel.

Araphel (Antagonist)

Appears from the start

A returned divine enemy whose advance threatens Amaranth and can permanently end Eternals. The Dvergar and their allies abandon Talon's Keep and organize the Shattered Bastion specifically to resist his coming war.

The Dvergar's operational leader. Gunnhild confirms that her people have chosen to join the war and oversees their evacuation from Talon's Keep to the Shattered Bastion.

Leofric (Supporting)

An ancient Eternal whom Maulkin believes may remember Araphel's earlier return. The ruined hilt of Leofric's sword allows Maulkin to locate him in a distant poisonous mire, prompting a new expedition in search of knowledge.

Talon (Minor)

The deceased owner of Talon's Keep. His surviving research includes inimicus, a powerful anti-magic substance that may offer Maulkin a weapon against dangerous magic.

Dvergar woman (Supporting)

A Dvergar volunteer who joins Maulkin's reconnaissance party as it leaves the Shattered Bastion for the Serpent's Gate. She travels with the mixed group of Dvergar, Shagnar Fawn, and human scouts under Maulkin's command.

Unnamed archer (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 17

A fire-using defender who fights beside Maulkin and Asher during the attack on the Bastion. The archer holds off Alvaren attackers while Asher counters Briar's lightning and Maulkin turns the inimicus against the enemy force.

Shagnar Fawn leader (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 2

The leader of the Shagnar Fawn occupying the Shattered Bastion. She confirms her people's compact with the local humans, defuses their first confrontation with Maulkin, and commits the Fawn to defend the territory until Araphel falls.

Ambergrit Dvergar twin (Minor)

First appears in chapter 3

One of two Ambergrit Dvergar twins who volunteer for Maulkin's three-day mission toward the Serpent's Gate. The pair joins a mixed scouting party sent to investigate the forces gathering beyond the Shattered Bastion's wall.

Eternal captive in an Alvaren forge (Minor)

First appears in chapter 6

A captive Eternal found alive within an Alvaren flesh forge. The victim has been incorporated into the machinery as its living source of power, revealing that the Alvaren are turning missing Eternals into tools.

Human farmer (Supporting)

First appears in chapter 3

A local farmer who volunteers to represent the humans on Maulkin's three-day reconnaissance mission. He joins the mixed scouting party despite having no evident combat experience.

Void Spawn (Antagonist)

First appears in chapter 10

An armored assassin formed from a fragment of Araphel and adapted to suppress Maulkin's Artifice. It attacks Maulkin near the waystone with bladed limbs and a power capable of permanent death, but he tears away its tail blades, turns them against its soul, and destroys it.

Death (Minor)

First appears in chapter 16

The authority Maulkin encounters after dying with the inimicus bound to his soul. Instead of returning him to his newly made shrine at the Bastion, Death sends him away, leaving the destination of his resurrection uncertain.

Eternal from Araphel's first defeat (Minor)

A female Eternal involved in Araphel's first defeat. Araphel confirms her part only while dueling Maulkin and refuses to identify her, leaving the person who completed the earlier binding unknown.

Solar mother goddess (Antagonist)

A senior solar goddess visiting the fortress of the solar war god. After finding that god already slain, she faces Maulkin, Mercy, and the returned Saren as they bring their campaign into the divine realm.

Lunar spider goddess (Antagonist)

The final old god to enter the struggle in the divine palace. He attacks Maulkin's group and declares an intention to consume all surviving life, making coexistence with the new order impossible.

Winged outsider (Supporting)

A winged, tailed, fawn-like visitor summoned through a portal during the siege of the Shattered Bastion. The outsider creates a vast number of duplicates and commits the resulting aerial force to the defense.
