In short (whole book)
Araphel's return forces Maulkin to unite Dvergar, Shagnar Fawn, humans, Inyoka, and eventually Alvaren at the Shattered Bastion. Raids, betrayals, and battles reveal that Araphel is destruction embodied and that Maulkin is becoming the Voidgod capable of opposing him. Briar dies after releasing Araphel, while the coalition's defenses and off-world reinforcements fail to stop the advancing host. The worms finally support Maulkin, but the Bastion must be evacuated and destroyed. Araphel permanently kills Asher and nearly kills Mercy before Maulkin turns his unified soul into a perfect new sword and casts Araphel into the void. Maulkin returns as a god, Mercy gains solar power, and Saren returns from an Alvaren afterlife. Together they destroy the old pantheon. Saren remains mortal, and the three form a council devoted to repairing Amaranth rather than conquering it.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Maulkin fought beside the Eternals Mercy and Asher while forming ties with the Dvergar, Inyoka, and Shagnar Fawn of Amaranth. Talon is dead, but his keep and research remain, including a powerful anti-magic substance called inimicus. Maulkin's former partner Saren is believed dead, and he holds the Alvaren ruler Briar responsible. A rusted sword connected to Leofric and the old struggle against Araphel was broken apart. Araphel has now returned, leaving Maulkin and his allies without their former equipment and facing a threat capable of ending Eternals permanently.
Story so far - through chapter 6 (this book)
Maulkin, Mercy, and Asher reach Talon's Keep after Araphel's return and learn that the Dvergar have chosen war. They relocate the Dvergar to the abandoned Shattered Bastion, where local humans and the Shagnar Fawn have already made a defensive compact. The three peoples agree to hold the Bastion while Maulkin leads a scouting party toward the Serpent's Gate. The scouts discover Briar's floating Alvaren city and see captive Inyoka being taken to flesh forges. Maulkin breaches the city, turning reconnaissance into a rescue operation. An Alvaren war beast kills one of the Ambergrit twins, but the party frees prisoners and attacks the forges. Inside the machinery, Maulkin finds mutilated Eternals being kept alive as power sources. He ends their suffering as he disables each forge. The surviving twin is almost destroyed by an abomination, then regenerates after Maulkin channels Primal into him. The party is still inside hostile territory, with freed Inyoka moving toward the escape route and Alvaren resistance closing in.
Story so far - through chapter 11 (this book)
Maulkin expands his Artifice through the Alvaren city's crystal and continues destroying its flesh forges. Briar, revealed as the Alvaren queen, captures and confronts him. She proposes cooperation against the true Voidgod, but Maulkin refuses, and she executes Inyoka prisoners to force his compliance. He breaks free and wounds her, only for Briar to recover, cast him from the city, and teleport it away after his death. Maulkin resurrects beneath Talon's Keep, retrieves the inimicus, and rejoins the refugees. The anti-magic substance prevents his own Waystone transport, leaving him to face a Void Spawn alone. He learns that the creature is a fragment of Araphel designed to counter him, then destroys it with soul-infused blades taken from its body. Back at the overcrowded Bastion, the rescued Inyoka add pressure to food and shelter. With no proven means of killing Araphel, Maulkin uses the ruined sword hilt to locate Leofric in a poisonous mire. He, Mercy, and Asher depart to seek the ancient Eternal's knowledge.
Story so far - through chapter 16 (this book)
Maulkin carries Mercy and Asher through the acid Mire as they search the ruins for Leofric. Asher, convinced defeat may be unavoidable, asks Maulkin to kill him rather than let the Void erase him. They find Leofric commanding the worms that transformed the swamp. He first bargains for protection and a chance to fight Araphel, then ambushes the group before finally agreeing to help. Leofric explains that Amaranth and its echo worlds form Araphel's prison, and that Araphel's spirit was once bound into the killing sword before its shards restored him. He believes only a developing Voidgod such as Maulkin could eventually kill the returned god. The party reaches the Bastion during a devastating Alvaren attack. Briar's floating city tears open the defenses while Leofric flees. Maulkin creates a new resurrection shrine, then travels alone to recover the inimicus. Araphel and his spawn intercept and dismember him, but Maulkin binds the anti-magic substance to his soul before dying. Death does not return him to the Bastion shrine and instead sends him elsewhere, while the battle continues without him.
Story so far - through chapter 21 (this book)
Maulkin returns after his shrine is destroyed, now carrying soul-bound inimicus that makes Briar's magic ineffective against him. Araphel enters the Bastion through a Waystone as Maulkin brings Briar's floating city down onto the battlefield. Briar survives the crash and admits that placing a sword shard in the Keystone caused the Alvaren's degeneration. She also confirms that Maulkin's void-derived powers may make him capable of killing Araphel. Briar briefly restrains Araphel, then releases him in exchange for survival terms for some Alvaren. Maulkin wounds Araphel with the inimicus while Asher prepares a Waystone spell. Together they trap Araphel inside the stone and pin him there with the anti-magic weapon, although the small reward for the victory suggests he is not truly dead. Briar resumes attacking. Maulkin draws the Keystone's remaining magic through a crystal weapon and kills her, avenging Saren. The surviving Alvaren submit to Maulkin and join the rebuilding effort. Gunnhild postpones removal of the Dvergar stone curse. Nearly half the combined population is dead, all worms are approaching, and Araphel's replenished armies are only days away.
Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)
The coalition prepares for a final siege as unnatural darkness covers the Bastion. Araphel arrives with an immense new host of Void Spawn. Maulkin and the local Alvaren open the Keystone to other worlds, gaining hundreds of Alvaren battle mages, stone-bodied Dvergar artillery, and a winged outsider able to multiply into an aerial army. Asher, Mercy, and the reinforcements destroy vast numbers of attackers, while Maulkin exploits the shared death-signature of Araphel's spawn. Yet each defense is temporary. Araphel breaks the crystal network and erases whole groups of defenders with Slaughter. Maulkin shifts to direct combat, using hidden shrines to die, resurrect nearby, recover his armor, and strike again with the inimicus. The weapon leaves wounds Araphel cannot heal, but spilled blood creates more spawn. Death cooperates with Maulkin's rapid returns, and each resurrection renews the limits on his strongest abilities. Araphel destroys the prepared shrines and steadily degrades the inimicus. He also reveals that a still-unidentified female Eternal helped complete his original binding. Maulkin can delay and injure him, but still cannot deliver a permanent death.
Story so far - through chapter 29 (this book)
Inside Araphel's mind, Maulkin learns that the old gods imprisoned the being meant to embody destruction, and that Araphel regards creation itself as captivity. He also sees the earlier defeat: a newly forged Dvergar sword drew in Araphel's soul while an Eternal completed the binding. Leofric attempts his own attack and is permanently beheaded. The native worms choose Maulkin as the stronger Voidgod claimant and turn against Araphel, but even their intervention cannot stop him. Maulkin evacuates the Bastion and collapses it, only for Araphel to emerge unharmed. Asher identifies the necessary answer as a symbolic act of perfect creation rather than greater destruction. The trio wound Araphel and destroy another spawned army, but a Keystone blade breaks and its destructive release restores him. Araphel strikes Asher down with death touch and begins ending Mercy the same way. Maulkin kills Mercy first to interrupt that final attack. His powers unite, and he draws his own soul and divinity into a newly created sword. The soul-blade cleaves Araphel and sends his soul permanently into the void. Maulkin's body falls as the weapon and his remaining divinity break apart, while the fates of Maulkin, Asher, and Mercy remain unresolved.
Story so far - through chapter 32 (this book)
Araphel's destruction restores Maulkin and elevates him into a Voidgod. Saren returns from an Alvaren afterlife that had suppressed her memories, while Mercy returns wielding solar divine power. Asher does not return. The three confront a senior solar goddess at the fortress of an already slain solar war god and permanently consign her soul to the void. Saren rejects Maulkin's offer of divinity and questions whether killing gods automatically makes their cause just. She ultimately agrees that the old order must end, but refuses the idea that she or Maulkin should simply replace it as unchecked rulers. In the divine palace, Maulkin and Mercy kill a lunar spider goddess, a dragon defender, the solar leader, and a wolf god who intends to consume the remaining life. Saren again refuses ascension, remaining mortal as the old pantheon falls. The collapsing palace becomes a council chamber for Maulkin, Mercy, and Saren. Surveying the damage across Amaranth, they choose incremental repair rather than further conquest. They begin with people in immediate need, accepting that the results of their stewardship may take centuries to judge.
How does it end? (ending)
Araphel destroys the Shattered Bastion but not its evacuated population. In the last confrontation he permanently kills Asher and nearly does the same to Mercy. Maulkin interrupts Mercy's death, unifies his own soul and powers into a newly created sword, and sends Araphel's soul into the void. The act appears to destroy Maulkin, but Araphel's defeat instead restores him as a Voidgod. Mercy returns with solar divine power, and Saren emerges from an Alvaren afterlife with her memories restored. The three then eliminate the remaining gods. Saren refuses divinity and insists that replacing the old pantheon with another unchecked ruler is not enough. Maulkin, Mercy, and the mortal Saren establish a shared council in the failing divine palace. They choose gradual repair over conquest, beginning with those already suffering across Amaranth. The Alvaren aftermath, the Dvergar stone curse, the displaced Bastion coalition, and the future of the Inyoka and worms remain unsettled. Whether the new partners can make creation kinder will take centuries to determine.
