In short (whole book)
Hadjar is compelled by the demon prince to destroy the Raven Sect and follows one of its fragment-bearing swordsmen into a dark-priest sanctuary. He stops a ritual that would sacrifice the Star Rain princess, whose restored clan promises aid if he rescues her captive father. On the route to Underground Whisper City, an ice-wolf shaman gives Hadjar its power, nearly killing him and forcing an advance inside liquid ice. Memories reveal the Black General's choice of mortal life, his love for a healer, her death at the god of war's hands, and the Therna legacy now locked in Hadjar's possession. The rescue becomes a public execution intervention. The apparent Star Rain survivor betrays the group, abducts the princess through the void, and helps turn the crowd against Hadjar. Alba Udun starts the gate operation while Hadjar openly battles the Underground Whisper Clan head. The princess, her father, the Raven Sect commission, and Hadjar's own family remain unresolved.
Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)
Previously: Hadjar Darkhan has reached nameless cultivation while carrying an imprisoned fragment of the ancient Black General. The fragment can grant him insight and power. His wife and unborn child remain beyond his reach, and their threatened deaths are the central obligation driving his choices.
Story so far - through chapter 9 (this book)
Hadjar is pulled into the Demon Lands, where a one-eyed emissary brings him before the demon prince. The prince claims a debt to Hadjar but turns its settlement into a commission: Hadjar must destroy Raven Castle, kill the Raven Sect's leader, and eliminate sect members encountered on the way. The emissary sends him to the Strange Lands, where Abraham Shensie, Itia, Guy, Gustaf, and Alba Udun have been assembled as a paid but willing party. Their first lead comes from a merchant supplying a rare ritual substance to a Raven-linked mercenary. Abraham kills the merchant, and Guy assumes his appearance for the exchange. The contact detects Abraham's surveillance and transports Guy to the Stone of the Suffering God. Hadjar and the others follow with a rescue deception. At the meeting site, a powerful Raven Sect swordsman holds Guy and commands hired fighters. He also carries a fragment of the Black General. Hadjar reaches Guy before the guard can kill him, but the party has entered a prepared trap against an opponent of unknown strength.
Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)
The Raven Sect swordsman reveals that his organization is collecting fragments of the Black General. He defeats Hadjar in a controlled duel and escapes with the ritual medicine, but Abraham's party has staged its apparent capture and retains a map that tracks him north. The pursuit enters a toxic marsh where mist causes hallucinations and the ground itself can become lethal. Along the way, Guy tells Hadjar about the mortal choices made by his distant family. Wider signs of war appear elsewhere: the demon prince's emissary threatens the Winter Court with an approaching parade, and an ancient mortal wizard carries a similar warning to the god of war in the Seventh Heaven. Hadjar senses the distant summons and speaks knowledge he cannot remember learning, deepening his concern about the Black General fragment within him. In the marsh, Abraham recounts an uncertain legend about the Potter, a soul-splitting craftsman whose death-bound army once devastated the region in pursuit of an elixir. Gustaf then finds evidence that the supposedly legendary armored force is present. The tracked sectarian remains ahead, but the party must now cross the remains of an ancient supernatural war.
Story so far - through chapter 24 (this book)
An ancient warrior bound to armor challenges Hadjar in the marsh. Its sword mastery lies beyond Hadjar's current true kingdom, and even Hadjar's strongest attack only damages its shield. The warrior incapacitates the rest of the party, spares Hadjar, and points northeast before leaving. A fairy messenger heals Hadjar, tells him that the dead kings hold a deeper sword secret, and urges him to investigate prophecy and a mysterious altar before the final war. Away from him, an emperor who preserves her people in exchange for service orders her to kill Hadjar when they next meet in battle. The party resumes pursuit while Hadjar grows more suspicious of Abraham and Guy's concealed histories. They observe the Raven Sect swordsman's party at an isolated rock, where Alba explains that dark priests once served beings beyond the Verge and gathered souls for them. A Star Rain delegation then arrives with a critically ill young heir. Her elderly guardian pays a Raven Sect ritual agent for a promised potion and cure. Alba recognizes that the agent has no such potion and is instead leading them into a concealed dark-priest temple. Hadjar's party follows the delegation into the temple.
Story so far - through chapter 34 (this book)
The Star Rain heir's energy body and meridians were shattered after the Forty Families Tournament, leaving her near death despite her exceptional cultivation. Her guardian follows the Raven Sect ritual agent deep into a dark-priest complex, even after the setting and the promised medicine prove false. Hadjar's party trails them through murals of the Black General's ancient war beyond the Verge. Abraham engineers tension among the mercenaries, while Hadjar privately warns the guardian that the ritual is a trap. The guardian learns that the agent carries darkness of the last nights rather than a healing potion, yet allows the attempt to continue because any remaining chance to save his ward outweighs the danger. Abraham's plan is harsher: he expects her death to give the Star Rain Clan a politically usable reason to attack the Raven Sect. He has secretly stolen the real ritual substance and substituted a fake. The agent opens the sanctuary after communicating with an otherworldly figure, revealing a portal into a desolate separate realm. Hadjar enters alone while Abraham's group prepares to act outside. The parties are now committed to a ritual whose stated cure is fraudulent, but neither the guardian nor Hadjar yet has a safe way to extract the dying heir.
Story so far - through chapter 41 (this book)
Inside the sanctuary, the Black General's projection explains that the apparent statue is a sleeping scout from beyond the Verge. The Raven Sect agent intends to awaken it by inverting and consuming the Star Rain heir's exceptional positive karma. Any apparent cure would only restore her briefly before killing her. Hadjar fights through the ritual guards, then battles her honorary guardian, who cannot abandon what he believes is her last hope. Hadjar mortally wounds him and beheads the agent before the rite can finish. The sanctuary creature pulls Hadjar into a vision of the Black General's ancient war, but Hadjar's unseen master intervenes, drives the creature away or destroys it, and restores the heir's youth at great personal cost. The guardian learns that Hadjar saved her and dies after their reunion. As the sanctuary floods, Hadjar is briefly taken before the goddess of fate, who gives him a blue ribbon meant to identify a matching light. He returns to Abraham's group and confirms that their earlier concealment was part of an agreed plan. A powerful water beast attacks during the escape, but the restored Star Rain princess arrives in winged armor and kills it with one strike. She asks the party to join her campaign against the Raven Sect, and they agree to travel toward her clan.
Story so far - through chapter 49 (this book)
The restored Star Rain princess travels home with Hadjar's party while mourning the guardian who raised her. At Star Rain City, she discovers that her supposed death has already altered the clan's balance. Her father, the clan head, reportedly became ill and withdrew, allowing his second wife and another daughter to take control. Guards at the manor initially call the returning princess an impostor, but she forces her way inside. Hadjar suppresses the assembled defenders without killing them, and the princess's grandmother, the Star Rain clan chief, arrives to recognize her and rebuke the rival faction. The deeper crisis is external: the princess's father was captured by the Underground Whisper Clan after a tournament dispute, and most Star Rain fighters are pinned outside the enemy city because any attack could endanger him. The clan chief learns how the princess was restored and decides to conceal the exact circumstances of the honorary guardian's death from her. She then offers Hadjar a bargain. If his party rescues her captive son, the Star Rain Clan will aid the campaign against the Raven Sect and give Hadjar access to instruction in its distinctive art of using will. Hadjar accepts and commits the group to leave for Underground Whisper City at dawn.
Story so far - through chapter 61 (this book)
Preparing for the hostage rescue, Hadjar develops a sword technique called Wind Path and its first stance, Endless Wind. The party chooses a mountain river as a possible covert route into Underground Whisper City, although the way crosses an ice-wolf den and a region of lethal liquid ice. Hadjar defeats a mortally wounded boar leader and receives directions to a waterfall, but two white-haired scouts warn the group away and invite them to shelter in their village. Their unnatural speed, lack of visible cultivation, and strange settlement lead Abraham to suspect that the inhabitants are ice wolves in human form. The suspicion is confirmed when a scout takes Hadjar alone to the waterfall and reveals the village shaman as the last ice wolf of the Nameless world. The Celestial being explains that the villagers are fragments of its spirit. Its creator commanded it to kill the Mad General, but the shaman refuses because that death would obstruct a larger future involving four generals. Instead, it directs Hadjar toward the land of ice and winds, has him drive his sword through its heart, and transfers its power to him. The village and its inhabitants disperse into snow, leaving the party without its hosts and Hadjar burdened by the absorbed force.
Story so far - through chapter 74 (this book)
The ice-wolf shaman's power infects Hadjar's core and leaves him only hours to live unless he advances to middle nameless cultivation in extreme cold. His companions carry him toward the liquid-ice river, where he begins the dangerous breakthrough. Fever visions reveal the Black General's past. After leaving the Seventh Heaven with a repository of divine knowledge, the former general chose powerlessness and mortal life. A village healer rescued and named him Nameless; over the years they fell in love and married. He refused invitations to return to divinity, accepted help from Boreas when emerald wolves took her, and received his black sword in exchange for his instrument. The Potter later saved both of them and predicted a future alliance. After fifteen mortal years, the goddess of fate told Nameless that he could never father a child and left a stone bed for his wife's eventual death. The Jasper Emperor then destroyed the fate records belonging to the god of war's descendants and domains. In retaliation, the god of war struck Nameless's home, killing his wife. Within Hadjar's core, the Black General remnant ends their sword duel and demands a later rematch. Hadjar awakens alive at middle nameless cultivation with a sealed jade repository labeled Therna. He cannot open it, but continues with the party toward Underground Whisper City.
Story so far - through chapter 82 (this book)
Hadjar's party reaches Underground Whisper City under disguise while the Star Rain army maintains a tense siege outside. The defenses and water routes defeat the original infiltration plan. A young Star Rain warrior, presented as the princess's childhood friend and a survivor of a failed rescue, reports that her father will be executed in two days. The dungeon is too well protected for another covert attempt. Meanwhile, the Jasper Emperor asks the sun god to locate the mortal carrying the largest Black General soul fragment, but the sun god refuses. Abraham replaces the failed prison plan with intervention at the public execution. Alba Udun takes a rare powder and the princess's hairpin through the sewers to coordinate with Star Rain fighters outside, while the rest of the party watches the scaffold. The captive clan head is brought out mutilated and bound against cultivation. Hadjar publicly confronts the Underground Whisper Clan head about her side's arrangement with the Raven Sect. The apparent ally then betrays the rescue party, seizes the princess, and escapes through the void. The enemy ruler turns the crowd against Hadjar and orders the marked Star Rain fighters seized. A distant pillar of fire shows Alba beginning the gate operation. Hadjar identifies himself as Hadjar Darkhan, Wind of the Northern Valleys, and attacks the enemy clan head. The story ends during their battle, with both Star Rain captives, the alliance bargain, and the Raven Sect commission unresolved.
How does it end? (ending)
The party enters Underground Whisper City but learns that the captive Star Rain clan head will be publicly executed before any covert rescue can be mounted. Abraham Shensie replaces infiltration with a display of force: Alba Udun is sent through the sewers to contact the Star Rain fighters outside, while Hadjar and the others position themselves at the scaffold. The captive is brought out mutilated and cultivation-suppressed. Hadjar challenges the Underground Whisper Clan head over her family's connection to the Raven Sect, but the young Star Rain warrior then reveals his betrayal, takes the princess hostage, and escapes with her through the void. The enemy ruler turns the crowd against Hadjar and orders the concealed Star Rain fighters seized. Alba's distant fire signals that his part of the gate operation has begun, and Hadjar publicly identifies himself before attacking the enemy clan head with his full wind power. The book ends during that fight. The princess and her father remain captives, the rescue bargain is unfulfilled, the Raven Sect still stands, and Hadjar retains both the hostile Black General remnant and an unopened Therna repository while the Jasper Emperor searches for a major fragment bearer.
