In short (whole book)

Stranded on a world whose magic was destroyed in an old invasion, Kale travels with Abby toward the ruined Magi Citadel while fighting witches, daemons, undead, and life-draining crystal geodes. Abby develops electrical magic, and together they uncover the former Magi portal network. On Talona, Queen Bael inherits King Bael's necromantic power, Max takes responsibility for Solakir, and their allies use the Dead Forge to reinforce the Animus Seal. Beneath the citadel, an imprisoned wolf-like overseer and an abyss goddess escape separately to Talona. Abby returns home to confront attacks there, while Kale restores the dormant world's Font network and collapses alive beside Simeon Grey. On Talona, connected disappearances and damage between realities culminate in a breach that sets Solakir ablaze as Max attempts to return.

Previously, in earlier books (earlier books)

Previously: Kale ruled Solakir on Talona and survived the conflict surrounding the Black Chasm, but a portal crossing left him missing. Max remained an Alliance commander, Kale's trusted ally, and an ally of Queen Bael. Queen Bael led the surviving coalition after the death of her husband, King Bael. Cassie protected Kale's children and household. Solakir had become both a refuge and a center of responsibility for the survivors, leaving its future uncertain without Kale. LeCory remained a member of Kale's magical circle. The earlier war had also left unresolved magical dangers across Talona, so the apparent end of one crisis did not give the coalition lasting security.

Story so far - through chapter 4 (this book)

About 120 years before Kale's arrival, Simeon Grey and General Cornwall Bree make a final stand during the evacuation of Rainer City. Simeon attempts to stop an invading hierarchy through the world's central Font, producing a catastrophe that destroys the source of ordinary magic. In the present, Kale awakens wounded in Colter Forest, separated from Talona and unable to open a way home. Abby guides him toward her town, where he helps resist witches but is detained because local authorities associate magic with daemons. His unfamiliar flowering vines save the corrupted child Shelley Winston. Abby's great-grandfather is revealed as Cornwall Bree, now an aged survivor of the old war. He explains that disappearances preceded the invasion and that corrupted victims could strengthen the enemy. Cornwall recognizes Kale as another off-world helper and directs him toward the ruined Magi Citadel at Rainer City, the likeliest place to learn why he was brought there.

Story so far - through chapter 8 (this book)

Kale travels under church guard to a village attacked by a daemon, with Abby insisting on accompanying him as his advocate. The daemon demands the return of something stolen. Kale restrains its dark essence, allowing Abby to kill it, and afterward the pair find and free Kale's vesha companion from an active crystal geode. They secure permission for a rail expedition north. A graveyard attack leads them to caves where deacons and other captives are being drained by an abyss-empowered witch. The witch traps Kale in an illusion built from his grief, but he escapes and defeats her. Abby kills Father Pasch when he demands that the captives be abandoned, and Kale conceals how Pasch died. The remaining prisoners, including Abby's father, are rescued, but a missing mother and children are not found. A second cracked geode links the caves to the crystal threat, while the defeated witch confirms that she had been waiting for the world's magic to return.

Story so far - through chapter 13 (this book)

On Talona, an archwizard investigating emptied mountain settlements is ambushed and abducted by a small masked wielder of green magic. Meanwhile, Abby's electrical discharges grow stronger as her train party continues north. Most passengers are taken to a ruined fort, where floating undead use another geode to bind Abby in crystal. Kale and Abby's father rescue her, but the undead pursue the train and infect her arm. Kale removes the corruption, and the crystal already in Abby slows its spread. The travelers then find settlements consumed by blue-white crystal. At a fissure holding a vast geode, Abby uses her emerging power to break its tendrils. The party destroys the geode with explosives, freeing survivors on the surface but killing those trapped below. Kale and Abby accept responsibility for the loss while recognizing that the wider crystal outbreak remains active. Elsewhere, angelic memory magic confirms that the missing Talona archwizard was alive when his attacker carried him away.

Story so far - through chapter 17 (this book)

On Talona, Queen Bael undertakes a forbidden heart bond because the Dead Forge cannot restore King Bael. A summoned demon performs the transfer, giving her the dead king's necromantic strength and memories, then tries to claim her unborn child. Queen Bael drives the demons back, but the claim remains unresolved. With Kale judged to be missing beyond Talona, Max accepts custody of Solakir until Kale's children can rule. Queen Bael prepares to carry the lethal Dead Forge to the Animus Seal, while reports of disappearances spread along northern borders. In the other world, Kale and Abby cross the desert and enter the unstable Magi Citadel. Abby deciphers a lock based on the phases of four moons, and the pair proceed after a collapse seals their retreat. Deeper underground, they find murals showing power once channeled through geodes. Abby charges a depleted geode with newly controlled magic, opening another protected passage.

Story so far - through chapter 20 (this book)

Max and Queen Bael move the Dead Forge toward the Animus Seal in secrecy. A rogue Dead Sister faction attacks twice, but the leader of a separate faction rejects the rebels and forms a temporary escort with the convoy. At the Midnight Canopy, an ancient northern warrior leader reluctantly permits the Forge to be used, reserving the right to take it if the plan fails. Six volunteers replace the seal's exhausted necromancers. Bloodstone kills two immediately, while the remaining four combine void magic with the Forge to create a new lock. Creatures drawn from the Canopy attack during the ritual, but Max and the northern warriors hold them back until the reinforced seal repels the assault. The Animus Seal is left apparently stable under the care of the four surviving necromancers, though it still requires defense. Queen Bael retains King Bael's power, and Max remains responsible for both the wider security crisis and Solakir.

Story so far - through chapter 25 (this book)

Kale and Abby discover that the Magi Citadel once supported travel between worlds. After they activate one of its archways, a wolf-like overseer escapes confinement and reports that Abby's people face a new attack. Kale sends her home to help them. The overseer crosses to Talona, and Kale kills the smaller creature that opened its passage. Damage from that creature's weapon also frees Simeon Grey and an abyss goddess. The goddess overpowers Kale and uses his blood to enter Talona near Black Void Castle. Still alive, Kale channels the geodes and restores the dormant Font network before collapsing beside Simeon. Meanwhile, Max takes custodial control of Solakir because Kale is presumed lost. On Talona, investigators associate missing settlements with a rupture between realities and severe corruption in a forest south of the fortress. The same crisis reaches Solakir when an intruder penetrates its protections and starts a fire inside the castle. Max is rendered unconscious during the urgent return, with the condition of the fortress's defenders unresolved.

How does it end? (ending)

Kale remains alive in the Magi world after the wolf-like overseer and an abyss goddess escape separately to Talona. His magic spreads through the dormant Font network, and he loses consciousness beside Simeon Grey before the result can be determined. Abby has already returned to defend her own world from renewed attacks. On Talona, Queen Bael, Max, four surviving necromancers, and their allies have stabilized the Animus Seal with the Dead Forge, although the site still needs protection and a demon's claim on Queen Bael's unborn child remains unresolved. Max becomes custodian of Solakir while Kale is presumed lost. A wave of disappearances and damage between realities then reaches the fortress itself. Its protections fail, the castle catches fire, and Max loses consciousness during an emergency return. The conditions of Cassie, Kale's children, and the other defenders are not established.
